CABO VERDE INSIDE part 2/4

CABO VERDE INSIDE part 1/4

Carnaval Sao Nicolau 2009: Estrela Azul

Maio – Cabo Verde

If you want to completely escape on holiday , Maio is for you a flat, almost forgotten, pacific island with white deserted sandy beaches. One of the flattest islands of the archipelago with vast and scenic beaches. Due to the influence of the wind erosion, the island shows very little evidence of his volcanic past. There are excellent opportunities to walk the dunes, which is said to have therapeutic qualities. Vila do Maio, the capital, lies parallel to the longest beach in Maio and is one of the longest beaches in the Cape Verde islands.

Maio is a small town that is full of tradition and Latin flavor. The center of the town is marked by a rustic church which plays a large part the day to day life in Maio. Approximately 3 miles from Vila do Maio, lies the quaint town of Morro. Morro is a small town with only one street that is surrounded by coconut palm trees, definitely worth a visit.

Maio was discovered in 1460, the island was used for cattle breeding. The island began to become inhabited in the 16th century; the main export for Maio was salt. The island is blessed with miles of sandy beaches and stunning landscape. The island is tipped to be a hot destination for tourism over the next few years an unspoilt paradise at present.

How A Scuba Diving Business Can Make Money

How does a scuba diving business make money?

Take this Caribbean dive operation as an example.  Divers typically spend $2,000 for a week at the resort.  16 divers at $2,000 each is $32,000 per week.  Now think how many businesses you pass on your way to work each day – the coffee shops, the dry cleaners, etc – how many of them don’t make that much money in a month?

Simon’s day starts like this…up early in the morning, checking the weather, planning the day’s dives, loading the boat…then it’s breakfast with the guests and driving the boat (the nautical equivalent of a pick-up truck).  At the dive site he’s encouraging the weaker divers and challenging the more skilled.  Back at port it’s cleaning up the boat and dinner with the guests…

And it’s seasonal work.  That’s right, when the seasons over you get to spend the time as you’d like.  Wouldn’t an active retirement that has you doing what you like to do most appeal?  Wouldn’t a retirement that depends less on your 401K be more achievable?  And doesn’t that beat your 10-days-after-two-years-maybe-vacation-lifestyle you have at work right now?

The Dive Boat – The Pickup Truck of the Dive Business

When you start a dive business, you need to minimize your investment in capital equipment and overhead, like boats and scuba equipment.  Spend as much money as you sensibly can on marketing to potential clients.

For example, your dive boat needs to transport clients reliably back and forth between dive sites.  It being a faster or newer model won’t necessarily increase revenue.

The dive boat is the pickup truck of boats!  It is basic, utilitarian and gets used hard every day.

As you start your dive business concentrate on creating positive cash flow – keep your costs low, while maximizing your revenue as quickly as possible.  Minimize your spending on overhead, employee costs and fixed assets (like boats).  Spend your available money on advertising, marketing and generating sales.  The quicker you can start making money the easier your life will be!

Sandgrains New Trailer

Trailer for the documentary Sand Grains.
350 miles off the coast of West Africa, on the tiny island nation of Cape Verde, the beaches are vanishing and Jose Fortes is watching his friends and family sell the sand. Global fish resources are rapidly diminishing and, as a result, the European Union has been bullying and blackmailing Cape Verde into surrendering its precious resource and way of life. The islanders cannot hope to counter the political and economic might of the superpower and so women and children are forced to begin trading away their own land in order to survive. A David and Goliath story, told through the eyes of Jose, a native islander émigré, who has returned to Cape Verde to witness the destruction of the place he once called home. Sand Grains documents a local situation which is only the beginning of a global catastrophe.

Sandgrains is a crowdfunded documentary produced under a creative commons licence. The project draws on support, talent and expertise through interactive web technology and social networks. It uses crowd-funding and crowd-sourcing as production strategy and reaches out to a global audience that performs a vital role in driving the project itself.
